The DeSoto County Sheriffs Department Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is dedicated to providing quality service to the citizens of DeSoto County through successful investigations and follow ups of specific criminal actions which occur within the jurisdiction of the DeSoto County Sheriffs Department. These crimes are investigated in an expeditious manner with the objective of identifying, apprehending and prosecuting persons responsible for the commission of specific criminal acts. The Criminal Investigations Division includes an Automated Fingerprint Identification System Section as well an Evidence Technician Section. The DeSoto County CID is also involved in coordinating efforts with surrounding law enforcement agencies and investigative divisions in an effort to not only apprehend perpetrators but suppress crime.


Crimes investigated by CID include, but are not limited to, felony crimes such as Assaults, Robberies, Child Abuse, Sexual Exploitation, Computer and technology-related crimes, Auto Theft and Burglaries.

Investigators assigned to the CID have an enormous responsibility as they must take assigned cases from the initial phase (the crime being reported) and follow-up by: processing crimes scenes, interviewing witnesses, victims and suspects, generating proper affidavits and warrants, assisting in the apprehension of the suspects, documenting all actions taken during the course of the investigation, organizing case files in a chronological manner and assuring all documentation is included in the file. At this point the investigator will need to start preparing him or herself to present the case to a grand jury. If a grand jury hands down an indictment (True Bill), the investigator will continue with the preparation process. The preparation continues due to the fact that if a defendant demands a trial, the investigator will testify and he / she must be extraordinarily familiar with every facet of the case. Investigating a case can be a long arduous process. It is not unusual for investigators to work on a case for several months, or even years, prior to the case being successfully closed. A successful investigator must be a highly motivated, steadfast and ethical officer who possesses excellent investigative and courtroom testimony skills.

There are few things more rewarding in law enforcement than knowing that because of your expertise and uncompromising efforts, a perpetrator has been segregated from society. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing the end result of your hard work and perseverance.
