The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department "Crisis Response Division" consists of two units. The Special Weapons and Tactics Unit or (S.W.A.T.) Team and the Crisis Negotiations Team. The S.W.A.T. team is comprised of 24 members. These team members are assigned to one of two team elements - Entry or Sniper. The Entry element is the larger of the two with it's members being trained in close quarters combat, breaching techniques, target analysis and dignitary protection. Officers assigned to the Sniper element are trained in precision rifle marksmanship and have demonstrated their abilities by winning numerous state and national competitions.
The Crisis Negotiations Team is comprised of 11 team members who are equipped with the latest most up to date negotiations equipment available. All 11 members have been certified and receive quarterly in service training on Hostage and Crisis negotiations techniques.
